BIO / ABOUT ME
Hi, I’m Melody Kao — a design researcher and strategist with a heart for people and a mind for systems.
I come from a background in Human Development and Family Sciences, and I recently earned my Master’s in Design and Innovation from SMU. I’ve spent the past few years working at the intersection of research, service design, and social impact — exploring how thoughtful design can create more human-centered experiences, whether in tech, nonprofit, or community settings.
My journey has taken me across cultures and disciplines — from supporting refugee communities in Germany to designing onboarding programs for creative nonprofits in Dallas, and developing reflection tools for first-time mothers navigating the emotional highs and lows of new parenthood. Every project has deepened my belief that the best design starts with empathy and ends with clarity.
As a researcher, I’m driven by curiosity and care — listening closely, uncovering patterns, and helping teams see the people behind the data. As a designer, I bring structure to ambiguity, turning insights into actionable, meaningful solutions. When I’m not geeking out over user insights or prototyping my next big idea, you’ll find me enjoying the chaos and joy of parenthood, planning the next trip, or lost in a good show with a cup of coffee.
